Recycling is an important practice that we all must adopt to save our environment. It enables us to reduce the amount of land waste material that goes into the landfill and pollute the ocean and also conserve natural resources and energy. However, You can play a huge part in implementing certain recycling techniques.

If you are looking to reduce waste and save your environment, here is a guide to help you achieve that at home.

Knowing what to be recycled

The first step to recycling effectively is to know what items can be recycled. Most recyclable items include paper, cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic. Additionally, electronic waste (e-waste) and batteries require a specialised method of recycling due to their harmful component. However, it is important to know about the specific recycling guidelines in your areas but unfortunately this is rarely practised in Nigeria because we mostly don't know where our waste goes to, not to mention how they are being sorted.

Set up a recycling station

Setting up a recycling station in your home is an excellent way to show you're willing to contribute to your environment and reduce waste. All you need to do is to find a designated area where you keep recycling bins for different materials, place them in a convenient location, such as the kitchen or garage with a label on each to encourage everyone in the household to participate. Do not forget to rinse or clean dirty containers or cans before dropping them in the recycling bin as it helps prevent contamination and ensure that items are properly recycled in their appropriate bins.

Waste reduction

Reducing waste is an important issue for everyone to consider, and one way to make a difference is by avoiding single use products or items that come with excess packaging. Single use products like plastic straws, disposable cups and cutlery are often thrown away a few minutes after use except for the plastic bowl that can be re-use at home for storage. Similarly, are items that come with excessive packaging and are often non-recyclable materials or try products with minimal packaging, while you can also opt for reusable alternatives like metal straw or cloth bags that can be used repeatedly, saves money and also reduces waste.

Lastly recycling is a tangible way to make a positive impact and embracing it as a daily practice within your homes is not merely an eco-conscious choice, but a collective responsibility. Following the steps outlined above you are significantly contributing to a sustainability movement and every can, bottle, plastic, carton or newspaper you recycle today brings us one step closer to a greener, healthier tomorrow.
